Session Notes · Part 3: Serving in Christ

The Well Shrewsbury · Part 3 of 3 · 16 Lessons · 30-Minute Sessions

How to read this: Bold = word to land on. Scripture = read aloud. Amber = ask the room. Green = your bridge. Purple = facilitator cue. Red = pastoral / watch-for. Times run from the start of a 30-minute session.

Standing Habits · Every Session

  • Core truth first open with the key scripture and the core truth, then teach to it
  • Protect the clock each lesson has a "running over?" cue. Cut from the bottom of the teaching, never the core passage
  • Homework stays homework discovery questions and revision cards are for learners to do on their own
  • Application one specific, named thing this week, not a summary
  • Close in prayer into what surfaced today, not generic

Section A · Living in the Spirit's Power

Before You Start

  • Sensitivity LOW people who feel they "don't have" compassion; burnt-out carers
  • Highest impact Philemon 1:6 the flow starts with acknowledging what's already there, not manufacturing it
  • Watch for pressure to "perform" ministry. This is release, not effort

① Opening + Core Truth0:00-0:05

Ask the room

"Think of a time you felt a sudden pull to help, comfort or speak to someone you barely knew. What did you do with it, and what stopped or moved you?"

Philemon 1:6 (NKJV)

"That the sharing of your faith may become effective by the acknowledgment of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus."

Cue

The flow starts with acknowledging what's already true, not manufacturing something new.

  • Core truth God's love is not something you work up. It's already placed in you by the Holy Spirit, waiting to be acknowledged and released

② Teaching Walkthrough0:05-0:19

1 · Already there, not built

  • every believer has "every good thing" in Christ. Like ringing a bell, not building from nothing

1 John 4:7 (NKJV)

"Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God."

  • love poured in is meant to move outward. Ordinary for anyone born of God

2 · Test the source

1 Corinthians 13:4-5 (NKJV)

"Love suffers long and is kind... does not seek its own..."

  • sympathy can be self-focused (how it makes me feel); the divine flow is aimed at their good

3 · Compassion, then action

Matthew 14:14 (NKJV)

"...He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick."

  • feeling compassion is the start, not the finish. The flow completes in a word, a touch, an act
  • Luke 23:34 Jesus released forgiveness even from the cross

Running over?

Drop Luke 23:34 first. Never cut Philemon 1:6 or Matthew 14:14.

③ Group Discussion0:19-0:26

Pick 1-2

• Why might acknowledging what's in you be like "ringing a bell" rather than building something new?

• Share a time someone's compassion toward you went beyond ordinary kindness. What made it feel supernatural?

• What most often stops believers completing the flow: fear, self-doubt, timing?

Cue

This lesson opens Part 3. Keep it warm and expectant; the room should leave feeling equipped, not pressured.

④ Application + Close0:26-0:30

  • Discern before helping, ask: does this match 1 Corinthians 13, or is it something else?
  • Follow through one prompting you've sat on. Complete it this week, however small
  • Hard season read one Gospel account; let Jesus' pattern (compassion, then action) recalibrate you
  • One thing which one this week?

Land it

"You don't manufacture the flow. You acknowledge it and let it reach someone." Close in prayer.

Before You Start

  • Sensitivity LOW people who feel ungifted or overlooked
  • Highest impact 1 Peter 4:11 the ability is supplied, not self-generated
  • Watch for quieter gifts (mercy, giving, helps) treated as second-class. Honour them out loud

① Opening + Core Truth0:00-0:05

Ask the room

"If someone asked 'What's your spiritual gift?' right now, could you answer? What has stopped you identifying or using it?"

1 Peter 4:11 (NKJV)

"If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ."

Cue

Ask: where does the ability come from? Supplied, not self-generated.

  • Core truth every believer has been given a specific gift by the Spirit, and ministry flows through God's supplied ability, not natural talent

② Teaching Walkthrough0:05-0:19

1 · A gift for every believer

1 Corinthians 12:7 (NKJV)

"But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all."

  • "to each one individually as He wills" (v11). Not just pastors and leaders
  • one purpose: the profit of all, not status

2 · The breadth of the gifts

  • 1 Corinthians 12 wisdom, knowledge, faith, healings, miracles, prophecy, discernment, tongues, interpretation
  • Romans 12 service, teaching, exhortation, giving, leading, mercy. Many already use these without naming them

3 · Supplied ability, not natural skill

  • natural talent isn't excluded; it's just not the engine

4 · Gifts grow through use

  • Acts 27 Paul ministered faith even in a shipwreck
  • gifts are sharpened in the exercising, not perfected in private first

Running over?

Drop the shipwreck example first. Never cut 1 Peter 4:11 or "each one".

③ Group Discussion0:19-0:26

Pick 1-2

• Why do so many assume spiritual gifts belong only to pastors or especially gifted people?

• How can a church make room for quieter gifts to be recognised as much as visible ones?

• What holds people back most from finding their gift: fear of failure, lack of opportunity, something else?

Cue

Invite the group to name gifts they see in one another. Keep it specific and generous.

④ Application + Close0:26-0:30

  • Identify read 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 and Romans 12:6-8. Write down the gift you most recognise in yourself
  • Exercise one low-stakes opportunity this week, even imperfectly
  • Hesitant take the first step trusting God's ability, not your confidence
  • One thing which one this week?

Land it

"If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability God supplies." Close in prayer.

Before You Start

  • Sensitivity MEDIUM sceptics; people burnt by hype or unanswered prayer
  • Highest impact Matthew 9:8 the crowd glorified God, not the man He worked through
  • Watch for sensationalism or celebrity. A miracle is the dinner bell, not the meal

① Opening + Core Truth0:00-0:05

Ask the room

"When you hear about a modern miracle, healing or answered prayer, what's your first instinct: excitement, scepticism, or in between? Why?"

Matthew 9:8 (NKJV)

"Now when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled and glorified God, who had given such power to men."

Cue

Ask: who received the crowd's response? Not the man who acted, but God.

  • Core truth miracles are never for the minister's credit; they exist to point people to God and confirm His Word as true

② Teaching Walkthrough0:05-0:19

1 · Where the glory goes

  • Mark 2:5 Jesus first forgave sins; the healing proved His authority to forgive. Visible miracle, invisible authority

2 · Miracles confirm the Word

Mark 16:20 (NKJV)

"And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs."

  • Hebrews 2:4 signs bear witness to the message; not spectacle separated from it

3 · Demonstration, not persuasion

1 Corinthians 2:4 (NKJV)

"...not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power."

  • miracles are the dinner bell, not the meal. Chasing signs mistakes the invitation for the feast

4 · The same power, still available

Hebrews 13:8 (NKJV)

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever."

  • expecting God to work in power today is consistent with who Christ still is

Running over?

Drop Hebrews 2:4 and Mark 2:5 first. Never cut Matthew 9:8 or Hebrews 13:8.

③ Group Discussion0:19-0:26

Pick 1-2

• Why describe miracles as the dinner bell rather than the meal?

• Have you witnessed what you believed was a genuine miracle? How did you respond afterwards?

• How can a church guard against miracles becoming about the reputation of the person used?

Pastoral

Some have prayed and not seen a miracle. Acknowledge it; don't overpromise. Keep the focus on God's character.

④ Application + Close0:26-0:30

  • Credit when something meaningful happens through you, redirect the credit to God, consciously
  • Pray ask God for one opportunity to pray for someone's need this week, trusting Him for the outcome
  • Hard season read one healing account slowly; notice the healed person's response
  • One thing which one this week?

Land it

"Same Jesus, same power, same purpose: that God is glorified." Close in prayer.

Section B · Living Among Others

Before You Start

  • Sensitivity MEDIUM isolation, loneliness, or difficult friendships and family ties
  • Highest impact James 5:16 confess struggles to one another for healing; forgiveness comes from God alone
  • Watch for this becoming "cut off your unsaved friends". The caution matters

① Opening + Core Truth0:00-0:05

Ask the room

"Think about the people you spend most time with. Are they, on balance, pulling you closer to God or quietly pulling you away? How would you know?"

1 Corinthians 15:33 (NKJV)

"Do not be deceived: 'Evil company corrupts good habits.'"

Cue

"Deceived" is the word. This isn't a truth we believe naturally without being told.

  • Core truth who you surround yourself with shapes who you become. Godly relationships aren't optional extras; they're how God grows and protects the Christian life

② Teaching Walkthrough0:05-0:19

1 · Called out together

  • Ekklesia a called-out group. Never designed for isolation

1 Corinthians 12:12 (NKJV)

"For as the body is one and has many members... so also is Christ."

  • the body suffers when members disconnect

2 · Confession and accountability

James 5:16 (NKJV)

"Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed..."

  • confess sin to God for forgiveness (1 John 1:9); confess struggles to trusted people for healing and accountability

3 · Exhortation and drifting

  • Hebrews 10:25 don't forsake gathering; exhort one another. Drift hardens the heart

4 · Company shapes character

Proverbs 13:20 (NKJV)

"He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will be destroyed."

Caution

This isn't a call to abandon people who don't yet know Christ. It's about close, formative company that consistently pulls you toward compromise.

Running over?

Drop ekklesia and Hebrews 10:25 first. Never cut James 5:16 or the caution.

③ Group Discussion0:19-0:26

Pick 1-2

• Share a time a godly relationship changed the direction of a struggle you were facing.

• What makes it hard to confess a real struggle to another believer, even one you trust?

• Where's the line between loving people far from God and letting evil company corrupt your habits?

Watch-for

Someone may be isolated or lonely. Notice them and follow up personally this week.

④ Application + Close0:26-0:30

  • Audit list the three to five people you spend most time with. Honestly: toward God or away?
  • Confess share one real struggle with a trustworthy, godly person this week
  • Drifting? be present at gathering this week, as protection for your heart
  • One thing which one this week?

Land it

"Walk with the wise and you'll become wise. Don't carry it alone." Close in prayer.

Before You Start

  • Sensitivity MEDIUM people facing hostility at work or home for their faith; some from persecuted countries
  • Highest impact 2 Timothy 3:12 "will", not "might"
  • Watch for confusing persecution with the consequences of our own poor choices. Help people tell them apart

① Opening + Core Truth0:00-0:05

Ask the room

"Have you ever softened what you believe, or stayed quiet about your faith, to avoid conflict or discomfort? What held you back?"

2 Timothy 3:12 (NKJV)

"Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution."

Cue

Point to "will", not "might".

  • Core truth persecution is not a sign something has gone wrong; it's the expected result of living faithfully for Christ in a world that opposed Him first

② Teaching Walkthrough0:05-0:19

1 · Expected, not accidental

Matthew 10:16 (NKJV)

"Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves."

  • the posture: wisdom and gentleness together. Neither naive nor retaliatory

2 · A promise, not a possibility

  • godly living itself, not failure, draws this resistance
  • 2 Corinthians 11:23-24 Paul's catalogue: prisons, stripes, "deaths often"

3 · The real opposition is spiritual

Ephesians 6:12 (NKJV)

"For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers..."

  • doesn't excuse mistreatment or make opponents enemies. It reframes the response: pray and stand

4 · Persecution spreads the Gospel

  • Acts 8:4 "those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word"
  • Galatians 6:12 some absence of persecution isn't peace; it's compromise

Running over?

Drop 2 Corinthians 11 and Galatians 6:12 first. Never cut 2 Timothy 3:12 or Matthew 10:16.

③ Group Discussion0:19-0:26

Pick 1-2

• Why did Jesus prepare His disciples for persecution so directly rather than promising ease?

• What's the danger in either extreme: being naive about opposition, or becoming bitter toward it?

• How do you tell suffering for righteousness from suffering the consequences of your own choices?

Cue

If anyone is facing real hostility now, pause and pray for them in the moment.

④ Application + Close0:26-0:30

  • Personal name one place you've avoided living out your faith. Pray for boldness there
  • Church pray this week for believers facing real persecution elsewhere
  • Pushback respond "wise as serpents, harmless as doves", not silence or sharpness
  • One thing which one this week?

Land it

"Opposition isn't evidence of failure. Stand steady, wise and gentle." Close in prayer.

Before You Start

  • Sensitivity LOW people with political framings of "kingdom"
  • Highest impact Luke 17:21 the Kingdom is within you: not the picture many expect
  • Watch for drift into end-times or political debate. Keep it on God's rule in daily life

① Opening + Core Truth0:00-0:05

Ask the room

"When you hear 'Kingdom of God', what image comes to mind: a place, a future event, a present reality, or something else?"

Luke 17:21 (NKJV)

"Nor will they say, 'See here!' or 'See there!' For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you."

Cue

This isn't the picture of the Kingdom many expect. Let the room notice the surprise.

  • Core truth the Kingdom of God is not primarily a place or political system; it's God's rule breaking into lives now, with a future, visible consummation to come

② Teaching Walkthrough0:05-0:19

1 · From direct rule to earthly king

1 Samuel 8:7 (NKJV)

"...they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them."

  • Israel's kings: following the Lord brought prosperity; abandoning Him brought captivity and ruin

2 · The anointing and the Messiah

  • 1 Samuel 16:13 kings anointed with oil; the Spirit came upon David
  • Messiah "Anointed One". Mashiach (Hebrew), Christos (Greek)

3 · Jesus' central message

  • Luke 9:2 sent "to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick"

Mark 1:15 (NKJV)

"The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel."

  • repentance is the doorway in

4 · Present now, consummated later

  • not armies and a throne yet. It grows quietly within and among believers, destined for visible glory

Running over?

Drop the Israel's kings pattern first. Never cut Luke 17:21 or Mark 1:15.

③ Group Discussion0:19-0:26

Pick 1-2

• Why do you think Jesus made the Kingdom His central message rather than any other theme?

• How do you hold the Kingdom as both present reality and future event?

• What's the danger in a Christian life that has forgotten repentance as the doorway?

Cue

If end-times questions arise, park them kindly. Keep the session on God's rule now.

④ Application + Close0:26-0:30

  • Personal name one area where you rule like an ungodly king. Bring it under His rule this week
  • Decision ask what "seek first the kingdom" means for one choice, before anything else
  • Out of control find one practical way to let God's rule show up today
  • One thing which one this week?

Land it

"The Kingdom is at hand. Repent and believe, and let the King rule today." Close in prayer.

Section C · Living Free from Law and Sin

Before You Start

  • Sensitivity MEDIUM can feel challenging to those who've kept parts of life back from Christ
  • Highest impact Acts 16:31 the full title: "the Lord Jesus Christ"
  • Watch for this sliding into works or fear about salvation. Lordship is receiving a Person, not earning

① Opening + Core Truth0:00-0:05

Ask the room

"Honestly, is there any part of who Christ is, His authority over your choices for instance, you'd rather keep at arm's length while still accepting His benefits?"

Acts 16:31 (NKJV)

"So they said, 'Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.'"

Cue

Notice the full title: "the Lord Jesus Christ", not simply "Jesus".

  • Core truth saving faith is faith in Christ Himself, not merely in what He can do for you. Accepting His benefits while resisting His lordship isn't New Testament faith

② Teaching Walkthrough0:05-0:19

1 · Christ Himself, not His benefits

  • Tozer the only object of saving faith is "Christ Himself", not His saviourhood or lordship as separate items
  • wanting rescue but resisting authority is selective faith

2 · Receiving the whole Person

John 1:12 (NKJV)

"But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God..."

  • receiving a Person, not a transaction for selected services

3 · Confessing His lordship

Romans 10:9 (NKJV)

"That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."

  • lordship is part of the saving confession, not an optional add-on

4 · The whole Gospel

  • Romans 1:3-4 belief tied to who He is: Son of David, Son of God, raised
  • Wedding picture a bride who wanted only what her husband provides wouldn't be said to love him

Running over?

Drop Romans 1:3-4 first. Never cut John 1:12 or Romans 10:9.

③ Group Discussion0:19-0:26

Pick 1-2

• Where is it easier to trust Christ for help than for direction?

• How does the wedding picture illuminate this lesson?

• What would change in evangelism if we led with "Jesus is Lord" as clearly as "Jesus saves"?

Cue

Keep the tone inviting, not accusing. This is about receiving more of Him, not proving yourself.

④ Application + Close0:26-0:30

  • Honest look is there any part of His authority you've kept at arm's length?
  • Confess say "Jesus is Lord" over one specific area of decision this week
  • Rescue vs direction read John 1:12 slowly; receive the whole Person
  • One thing which one this week?

Land it

"Not a set of services. A Person. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ." Close in prayer.

Before You Start

  • Sensitivity LOW people stuck in performance-based faith
  • Highest impact Romans 3:20 the Law produces knowledge of sin, not righteousness
  • Watch for hearing "the Law is bad". It's holy and good; it just can't save

① Opening + Core Truth0:00-0:05

Ask the room

"Have you ever tried to earn a clear conscience by being 'good enough'? How did that end?"

Romans 3:20 (NKJV)

"Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin."

Cue

Ask: what does the Law produce here? Knowledge, not righteousness.

  • Core truth God's Law was never a path to righteousness; it was given to reveal sin and expose the need for a Saviour

② Teaching Walkthrough0:05-0:19

1 · A conscience for everyone

  • Romans 2:14-15 the work of the law written in their hearts. Everyone has moral accountability

2 · The Law's true standard

  • Matthew 5:21-22 Jesus traced murder and adultery back to the heart. He raised the bar

3 · Diagnostic, not curative

James 2:10 (NKJV)

"For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all."

  • all-or-nothing: which is precisely why it can't save

4 · Christ, the end of the Law

Romans 10:4 (NKJV)

"For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes."

  • Galatians 3:24 the Law is a tutor to bring us to Christ, not a ladder
  • that's why the Gospel is good news, not just more information

Running over?

Drop Romans 2:14-15 first. Never cut Romans 3:20 or Romans 10:4.

③ Group Discussion0:19-0:26

Pick 1-2

• Why did Jesus raise the Law's standard to the heart rather than lowering it?

• Share a time you tried to earn God's approval through your own effort. What happened?

• What's the risk for a Christian who received grace but still tries to maintain it by law-keeping?

Cue

Link back to Part 1 Lessons 2 and 3 (grace, righteousness). Same truth, deeper angle.

④ Application + Close0:26-0:30

  • Watch notice when you try to "earn" a clear conscience rather than rest in Christ
  • Read one of the Ten Commandments; let it show you where you fall short, then bring it to Christ, not self-improvement
  • Old guilt meditate on 2 Corinthians 5:21 as identity, not effort
  • One thing which one this week?

Land it

"The Law diagnoses. Only Christ cures." Close in prayer.

Before You Start

  • Sensitivity LOW performance-driven believers; people who think grace is "too easy"
  • Highest impact Romans 6:14 what breaks sin's dominion is grace, not effort
  • Watch for grace heard as licence. Grace removes sin's dominion; it doesn't excuse indulging it

① Opening + Core Truth0:00-0:05

Ask the room

"When you fail, is your instinct to try harder to make up for it, or to run straight to God? What does that reveal about what you believe about grace?"

Romans 6:14 (NKJV)

"For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace."

Cue

Ask: what breaks sin's dominion in this verse? Grace, not effort.

  • Core truth grace is not merely forgiveness for the past; it is God's unearned favour and ability, freely given, replacing performance as the basis of standing with Him

② Teaching Walkthrough0:05-0:19

1 · Favour plus ability

Ephesians 2:8-9 (NKJV)

"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works..."

  • grace precedes and enables effort; it isn't a reward for it

2 · Impossible to earn

  • earning favour by flawless performance is like defying gravity: unsustainable however sincere
  • Titus 3:5 "not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy"

3 · Not a discount: complete

Romans 5:17 (NKJV)

"...those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ."

  • Christ didn't reduce the penalty; He removed it and gave His righteousness

4 · Guard the focus

  • Proverbs 4:23 staring at personal failure, not Christ's finished work, weakens faith rather than strengthening holiness

Caution

"Not under law but under grace" is not licence to sin. Grace changes the basis of identity and empowerment; it doesn't excuse what it has freed you from.

Running over?

Drop Titus 3:5 and Proverbs 4:23 first. Never cut Romans 6:14 or the caution.

③ Group Discussion0:19-0:26

Pick 1-2

• Why do believers who understand grace doctrinally still live functionally "under law"?

• How does grace as favour plus ability, not just pardon, change how you approach a current struggle?

• How would you answer someone who says grace is "too easy" or gives permission to sin?

Cue

Link back to Part 1 Lesson 11 (when a Christian sins). Same freedom, different angle.

④ Application + Close0:26-0:30

  • Notice catch yourself trying to earn God's favour; consciously return to grace
  • Redirect when failure comes to mind, turn your focus to Christ's finished work
  • Study read Romans 5:17 and 6:14 together this week
  • One thing which one this week?

Land it

"Sin shall not have dominion over you. Not because you tried harder, but because you're under grace." Close in prayer.

Before You Start

  • Sensitivity MEDIUM people carrying long-term guilt or shame over past sin
  • Highest impact Hebrews 8:12 God will remember no more
  • Watch for confusing healthy conviction with lingering sin-consciousness. Draw the line clearly

① Opening + Core Truth0:00-0:05

Ask the room

"Do you ever feel you have to keep 'paying' for past sin, even though you know it's forgiven? Where does that come from?"

Hebrews 10:14 (NKJV)

"For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified."

Cue

Notice the two words held together: "perfected" and "forever".

  • Core truth Christ's single sacrifice dealt with sin permanently; believers are no longer meant to carry an ongoing consciousness of guilt

② Teaching Walkthrough0:05-0:19

1 · The old system's limit

Hebrews 10:1 (NKJV)

"...can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect."

  • the repetition itself proved the sacrifices couldn't fully deal with sin

2 · One offering, complete

  • Hebrews 9:12 "with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption"

3 · God's deliberate non-remembrance

Hebrews 8:12 (NKJV)

"...their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more."

  • God doesn't merely tolerate forgiven sin; He chooses not to remember it

4 · No condemnation

Romans 8:1 (NKJV)

"There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus..."

  • holding on to forgiven sin is living by the old covenant's logic of never-quite-enough payment
  • persistent guilt after genuine repentance isn't humility; it denies the sufficiency of the cross

Running over?

Drop Hebrews 10:1 detail first. Never cut Hebrews 10:14 or 8:12.

③ Group Discussion0:19-0:26

Pick 1-2

• Why do believers accept forgiveness intellectually but still feel they must keep paying emotionally?

• What's the difference between conviction that leads to repentance and sin-consciousness that denies the cross?

• How would a church change if it genuinely lived "no more consciousness of sin" together?

Pastoral

Someone may carry heavy shame. Speak Hebrews 8:12 over them gently; offer private prayer.

④ Application + Close0:26-0:30

  • Name it one forgiven sin you still carry. Bring it to God as already settled
  • Read all of Hebrews 10 this week
  • When it resurfaces answer with Hebrews 8:12, not self-condemnation
  • One thing which one this week?

Land it

"God chose to remember it no more. You don't have to keep paying for what He's forgotten." Close in prayer.

Before You Start

  • Sensitivity HIGH low self-worth, body image and identity struggles may be close to the surface
  • Highest impact Romans 5:19 believers are made righteous, not merely forgiven
  • Watch for tender self-worth wounds. The title came from a student's own struggle; keep it personal and gentle

① Opening + Core Truth0:00-0:05

Ask the room

"If God's opinion of you could never be improved and never be lowered, no matter what, how would that change the way you talk to yourself today?"

Romans 5:19 (NKJV)

"For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man's obedience many will be made righteous."

Cue

Ask: what are believers "made"? Righteous, not merely forgiven.

  • Core truth God's love for you is already complete: it can't be increased by good behaviour or decreased by failure. Righteousness in Christ is a permanent gift, not a fluctuating balance

② Teaching Walkthrough0:05-0:19

1 · No ceiling on God's love

1 John 4:10 (NKJV)

"...not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins."

  • not a sliding scale. Fully expressed at the cross; better behaviour doesn't earn more

2 · Righteousness that can't be revoked

  • Romans 4:5 credited to the one who "does not work but believes". Never earned, so can't be lost by failure

3 · Nothing can separate

Romans 8:38-39 (NKJV)

"...nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

  • the list is deliberately exhaustive, including your own weaknesses

4 · An exchanged righteousness

  • 2 Corinthians 5:21 identity anchored in an exchanged righteousness, not personal history
  • self-worth is answered not by self-improvement but by rightly understanding identity

Running over?

Drop Romans 4:5 first. Never cut Romans 5:19 or Romans 8:38-39.

③ Group Discussion0:19-0:26

Pick 1-2

• Why do self-worth struggles persist even among believers who know justification well?

• Name a specific lie about your worth that Romans 5:19 directly contradicts.

• What would change in discipling new believers if identity, not behaviour management, came first?

Watch-for

Self-worth can connect to deeper struggles. If concern arises for someone's wellbeing, follow up privately and involve leaders.

④ Application + Close0:26-0:30

  • The lie write one lie you believe about your worth, and the Scripture that answers it
  • Read aloud Romans 8:31-39 this week
  • Scoring yourself? replace it with Romans 4:5
  • One thing which one this week?

Land it

"You are loved. Fully. That can't go up and it can't go down." Close in prayer.

Section D · Living as a Disciple

Before You Start

  • Sensitivity MEDIUM people anxious about whether their faith is "real enough"
  • Highest impact James 2:17 faith without works isn't immature; James calls it dead
  • Watch for works creeping in as the basis of salvation. Fruit is evidence, never payment

① Opening + Core Truth0:00-0:05

Ask the room

"If someone watched your life closely for a month without hearing a word about your faith, what would they conclude you believe?"

James 2:18 (NKJV)

"...Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works."

Cue

James isn't arguing against faith; he's asking what genuine faith looks like.

  • Core truth saving faith is not a one-time decision that ends; it's a continuous, living trust that naturally produces visible fruit over time

② Teaching Walkthrough0:05-0:19

1 · A continuing trust

  • many New Testament commands are continuous: keep on believing. A lifestyle, not a closed event

Galatians 2:20 (NKJV)

"...the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me."

2 · Fruit as evidence, not payment

Matthew 7:16-17 (NKJV)

"You will know them by their fruits... every good tree bears good fruit..."

  • what we do is the outcome of what we believe, never the cause of God's acceptance

3 · Two kinds of works

  • Works of the Law attempts to earn salvation (Galatians 2:16)
  • Works of faith fruit flowing from salvation already received

4 · Faith without works is dead

  • James 2:17 not a lesser but valid faith. Dead
  • James doesn't contradict grace; he describes what living faith looks like

Running over?

Drop the Greek tense point first. Never cut James 2:17-18 or "evidence, not payment".

③ Group Discussion0:19-0:26

Pick 1-2

• Why does James say faith without works is "dead" rather than "incomplete"?

• Share fruit you've seen grow visibly, over time, in your life or someone else's.

• How do you hold salvation by grace alone together with James' insistence?

Cue

Reassure anxious members: fruit grows over time, not overnight. The aim is honest reflection, not fear.

④ Application + Close0:26-0:30

  • Name fruit one or two things that have genuinely grown in you since coming to faith
  • Mirror read Matthew 7:16-20; ask God to show you what your life is producing
  • One gap where claimed faith and behaviour don't match, take one concrete step
  • One thing which one this week?

Land it

"Show me your faith by your works. Grace plants it; fruit shows it's alive." Close in prayer.

Before You Start

  • Sensitivity MEDIUM tender consciences prone to doubting salvation
  • Highest impact 1 John 5:13 written so you may know, not merely hope
  • Watch for Simon the sorcerer creating anxiety in genuine believers. Diligence, not doubt

① Opening + Core Truth0:00-0:05

Ask the room

"Think of someone whose life convinced you their faith was real before they said a word. What did you actually observe?"

1 John 3:14 (NKJV)

"We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren..."

Cue

Notice what's offered: a way to know, not merely hope.

  • Core truth believers can recognise salvation, in themselves and others, through observable evidence: righteous living, love and holiness, not merely claimed belief

② Teaching Walkthrough0:05-0:19

1 · Written so you may know

1 John 5:13 (NKJV)

"These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life..."

  • 1 John was written to give assurance, not leave the question open

2 · Love as concrete evidence

  • 1 John 2:3 "by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments"

3 · Righteousness as a settled pattern

  • 1 John 3:7 "he who practices righteousness is righteous". Not sinless perfection; a settled trajectory

4 · Simon the sorcerer

  • Acts 8:13, 21 he "believed" and was baptised, yet his heart was not right
  • not to create doubt, but to show that fruit, not a religious moment, is the confirmation

5 · Diligence, not anxiety

2 Peter 1:10 (NKJV)

"Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure..."

  • Scripture intends grounded confidence, not perpetual uncertainty

Running over?

Drop 1 John 2:3 and 3:7 detail first. Never cut 1 John 5:13 or the diligence point.

③ Group Discussion0:19-0:26

Pick 1-2

• Why was 1 John written "that you may know", rather than leaving the question open?

• What has love for "the brethren" looked like in your experience of church?

• How can a believer practise 2 Peter 1:10 diligence without anxious self-doubt?

Pastoral

If someone voices fear about their salvation, return them to 1 John 5:13 and Christ's finished work. Follow up privately.

④ Application + Close0:26-0:30

  • Love in action honestly assess how your love for other believers shows in deeds, not sentiment
  • Read 1 John in one sitting this week
  • Confirm one specific act of obedience, not just reflection
  • One thing which one this week?

Land it

"We know we've passed from death to life because we love. Let love be your evidence." Close in prayer.

Before You Start

  • Sensitivity LOW some may feel unqualified to disciple anyone
  • Highest impact Matthew 28:19 the instruction is to make disciples, not decisions
  • Watch for "forsake all" landing as guilt. Present it as invitation; link back to Part 1 Lesson 7

① Opening + Core Truth0:00-0:05

Ask the room

"Has anyone personally invested in helping you grow as a follower of Christ, one-on-one, over time? What difference did it make?"

Luke 14:33 (NKJV)

"So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple."

Cue

Jesus doesn't soften this cost to make it easier to hear. Don't soften it either; frame it with grace.

  • Core truth Christ's commission was never merely to make converts; it was to make disciples: transformed believers who reproduce genuine faith in others

② Teaching Walkthrough0:05-0:19

1 · A cost named plainly

  • Luke 14:26 discipleship is distinguished from casual interest. "Hate" = love less by comparison (Part 1 Lesson 7)

2 · Disciples, not only converts

Matthew 28:19-20 (NKJV)

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations... teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you."

3 · Multiplication, not addition

  • one disciples one, who disciples another, doubling. Over twelve to fifteen years it overtakes mass campaigns; it compounds

4 · Christian and disciple: one commitment

Acts 11:26 (NKJV)

"...And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch."

  • the terms were interchangeable. Discipleship is like raising a child: patient, sustained, personal

Running over?

Drop the multiplication maths to one line. Never cut Matthew 28:19-20 or Acts 11:26.

③ Group Discussion0:19-0:26

Pick 1-2

• Why do churches default to measuring attendance or decisions rather than disciples who disciple others?

• What does "forsake all" mean for you practically, not just theoretically?

• How does the multiplication picture change your view of one faithful discipling relationship?

Cue

Invite people to name who discipled them. It makes the call concrete and grateful.

④ Application + Close0:26-0:30

  • One person think of someone you could begin discipling, even informally. Take a first step
  • Forsake all identify what it means for you in practice right now
  • Beyond events add one act of personal, sustained investment in someone's growth
  • One thing which one this week?

Land it

"Not converts but disciples: people who'll do this for someone else." Close in prayer.

Before You Start

  • Sensitivity LOW people who think their story is "boring" or who have painful pasts
  • Highest impact no dramatic conversion needed. The substance is transformation, not drama
  • Watch for pressure tactics in evangelism. Relationship over a rushed decision

① Opening + Core Truth0:00-0:05

Ask the room

"If a stranger asked you right now, 'How did you become a Christian?', could you answer clearly in under two minutes?"

Acts 26:16 (NKJV)

"...I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen..."

Cue

The role given is witness: someone reporting what they've seen, not a persuader.

  • Core truth a personal testimony, told simply and honestly, is one of the most effective and accessible evangelism tools every believer already has

② Teaching Walkthrough0:05-0:19

1 · A story people can connect to

Acts 4:20 (NKJV)

"For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard."

  • people connect to a real story before they connect to a doctrine

2 · Paul's own pattern

  • Acts 9, 22, 26 Paul told his story three times to different audiences

3 · Every genuine story counts

  • raised in faith with no crisis moment? You still have a testimony of God's ongoing work
  • Acts 16:14 the Lord opened Lydia's heart. He does the opening; we do the telling

4 · Relationship over pressure

  • Romans 10:14 "how shall they hear without a preacher?"

Caution

Pressuring an immediate decision can feel manipulative and close a door that patient conversation would have kept open.

Running over?

Drop the Paul retellings detail first. Never cut Acts 26:16 or "every story counts".

③ Group Discussion0:19-0:26

Pick 1-2

• Why might a personal story reach someone a theological argument wouldn't?

• Practice round: share a two-minute version of your testimony with one other person.

• How can quieter testimonies be valued as much as dramatic ones?

Watch-for

Testimonies can touch painful pasts. Nobody has to share details they're not ready to. Keep the practice optional.

④ Application + Close0:26-0:30

  • Draft a two-minute testimony: before, turning point, after
  • Practise tell it to one trusted person this week
  • Open a door one low-pressure opportunity: a conversation, an offer to pray
  • One thing which one this week?

Land it

"You're a witness, not a salesperson. Tell what you've seen." Close in prayer.

Before You Start

  • Sensitivity LOW people who feel on the edge of church life
  • Highest impact Ephesians 4:12 the saints do the work of ministry; leaders equip
  • Watch for the "most Christians never evangelise" statistic heard as condemnation. It's a diagnosis, not a verdict

① Opening + Core Truth0:00-0:05

Ask the room

"If every believer in our church used their gifts for discipleship and outreach, not just the pastors, what would actually change?"

Ephesians 4:12 (NKJV)

"For the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ."

Cue

Ask: who does the work of ministry here? The saints, not only their leaders.

  • Core truth discipleship and evangelism were never meant to rest on a gifted few; every believer's gift has a role in building the church and reaching others

② Teaching Walkthrough0:05-0:19

1 · A striking gap

  • most believers never personally evangelise, leaving it to a small minority, often clergy

2 · Leaders equip; saints minister

  • Ephesians 4:11-12 apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers exist to equip, not do it all
  • James 1:22 doers, not hearers only

3 · Every gift necessary

1 Corinthians 12:21 (NKJV)

"And the eye cannot say to the hand, 'I have no need of you'..."

  • team ministry: teachers, helpers, intercessors, practical servers together

4 · The whole arc

  • empowered by the Spirit, joined in community, free from guilt, fully accepted, sent out

Acts 1:8 (NKJV)

"But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me..."

Running over?

Drop James 1:22 first. Never cut Ephesians 4:12 or the closing arc.

③ Group Discussion0:19-0:26

Pick 1-2

• Why do so few believers personally evangelise, even in healthy churches?

• Share a quieter gift (hospitality, administration, practical help) you've seen used powerfully for discipleship.

• Looking back over the whole series, what one concrete step will you take as a result?

Cue

Leave the final question for the closing minutes. It's the series review and send-off.

④ Application + Close0:26-0:30

  • Your role teacher, helper, intercessor, practical server? Commit to one act in that role this month
  • Affirm one gift in someone else that tends to go unrecognised
  • Act choose one truth from Part 3 and put it into action this week
  • One thing which one this week?

Land it

"Equipped, not spectating. Every gift, every member, sent." Close the series in prayer and thanksgiving.
